Why did Aaron and his sons wear bonnets and mitres on thier heads?

“And thou shalt put the mitre upon his head, and put the holy crown upon the mitre.”
Exodus 29:6
“Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head… For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God.”
1 Corinthians 11:4,7
As a Christian, I also wondered for some time why the priests, the sons of Aaron, were commanded to wear head coverings, when in the new testament God says that every man praying or prophesying with his head covered dishonoureth his head, for he is the image and glory of God.
Is there a contradiction in the Bible, then, concerning this?
Nay, of course not. It is merely a matter of searching the scriptures, and growing in the grace of God, and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ our Lord.
It has to do with the two testaments, and the difference between them; specifically the fact that the things that were done in carnal ordinances in the days of the old testament were types and shadows of things that were to come.
“For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:
Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.”Hebrews 8:4,5

“For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.”

Hebrews 10:1

The bonnets and mitres that the priests wore were for glory and beauty (Exodus 28:40). They were God’s priests, but they had not yet been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ; and so were as heirs who are children, and therefore are under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. (Galatians 4:2)
So, they were sanctified by anointing oil and the blood of bullocks, but we are sanctified by the blood of Christ and the Holy Ghost.
They wore special garments outwardly, but we today have God’s righteousness inwardly, in the inner man, where the Spirit of God dwells.
And, they had bonnets and mitres for beauty and glory, but we who are the sons of God today are the image and glory of God, for we are in Christ Jesus, who is the image of God, and who had glory with God before the world was, and is now glorified in him.
So, since the cross and the blood was shed (not the blood of bulls and goats, which can never take away sin, but the blood of God’s Lamb, Jesus Christ our Lord), we who are the men in God’s royal priesthood no longer need special garments or head coverings for glory, for that glory is fulfilled upon us in Christ Jesus our Lord, just as the taking away of the veil in the temple when he said “It is finished”, and gave up the ghost.
And, being that a woman’s long hair is her glory (to her physical body); then it remains that she ought to be covered just as under the law, as a sign of power on her head because of the angels; meaning a sign of her subjection to the man, and also to Christ, and to God.
“But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.

For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.”

1 Corinthians 11:3-7

Praise the Lord.
Amen.
