How does a Christian understand 1 John 5:7?

“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”

1 John 5:7 is a very simple teaching which has to do with God bearing witness of the fact that he hath given his people eternal life, and this life is in his Son (1 John 5:11).

So, he bore witness from heaven (1 John 5:7), and in the earth (verse 8).

Of the witness that God gave from heaven, John wrote,
“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”

God bore witness from heaven of his Son, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (Matthew 3:17)
So, being that God has begotten a Son, then he is called the Father.

Also, in John 1:1, we read,
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
So, we know from the scripture that the Word was God.

And the only true God is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

NOTE that the Bible does NOT say that the Word was the Son of God.

It says that the Word was God.

And, being that God is holy, and he is a Spirit, he is also called the Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost).

So, we can see from the scripture, that the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost are three titles that refer to the same person – God; and these are three ways that he bore witness from heaven of the life that is in his Son, Jesus Christ.

That is why John wrote, “…and these three are one.”

And then, in verse 8, we see three ways that God hath borne witness in the earth of this same thing.

Amen.
